Why goals aren't as important as we think

Have you ever played the game ‘Would you Rather’? It poses these bizarre questions like ‘would you rather be itchy forever or never eat solids again’. I can’t remember the exact examples, but you get the gist of it. Tough existential choices huh?

So my question to you today is this: Would you rather be given $1m or earn it?

Essentially, do you want to be magically given the end result, i.e. your goal, or would you want to go through the process of earning it?

In the past, I picked that I wanted to be given $1m.

Today, I pick the option of earning it.

Here’s why.

Our goals in themselves are nothing more than a passive result. An outcome from having done something. They can come and go. They can be taken away.

However, the knowledge, skills, & confidence gained, AND who you become along the way - when working towards your goal - can’t be taken away. You have that for life, and guess what - you can now reinvest all of that ‘intellectual currency’ into your next goal.

So as we start the next half of this year and you revisit some of your goals or think about your upcoming ones, remember this: Your goals are important but don’t forget to lean all the way into the process of getting to your goal, taking stock of who you are becoming in the process, the knowledge & skills you’re building, the limitations you’re challenging, and celebrate that just as much as when you smash your goals!

Hit 'reply' to this email and let me know - what is one big goal that you secretly want to work towards, but it might feel unreachable or unreasonable right now?
