Do NOT stop comparing yourself
We have a lot of mosquitoes where we live and they love to bite Noelle (my 4-year old daughter).
And because of that, she has made it her mission to give me a detailed briefing on how all of her bites are doing - DAILY.
She gets so frustrated when they're itchy and scratches them until her skin is raw. And as a default, I used to say "Noelle, stop scratching!" That never worked - she would actually just scratch them even more.
Then, one day I had a fresh stack of homemade pancakes come out right in the middle of her scratching fury, and she shifted her focus. It was like MAGIC - she gobbled up the pancakes and I didn't hear anything more about her bites.
So, why am I telling you this story about mosquitoes when probably all you want to know is how to stop letting your fears, your wavering confidence, all that comparison and self-doubt keep you from being the powerful leader that you are?
Good question.
Well, because sometimes we notice when our fears come up, the comparison sets in, the self-doubt messages rise...and we're hard on ourselves. We say things like "I should know better than this", "I thought I moved past this" - and then we try so hard to STOP thinking about those things.
And just like with the story above, my challenge to you is don't STOP focusing on what you don't want - just START to focus on what it is that you do want.
I love this quote by Bob Goff - "We won't be distracted by comparison if we are captivated by purpose."
If you're anything like me or my clients, the thing that always brings us back to focus and gives us that sense of momentum again is when we remind ourselves of the bigger picture.
Things like:
* WHY you even started what you did?
* Why it's so important for you to accomplish what you want to?
* What is it about you that is uniquely placed to rise up and lead where you are today?
* What is the cost if you don't?
When you start focusing on these questions, your focus will shift from what's not working to what's next for you.
Now, your turn. What answers come up for you when you read those questions above?
